mycatprint.com American Bobtail

The American Bobtail is a relatively new and uncommon breed of cat most notable for its stubby "bobbed" tail about half the length of a normal cat's tail. This is the result of a genetic mutation affecting the tail development, similar to that of a Manx. The cat is not related to the Japanese Bobtail despite the similar name and physical type — the breeding programs are entirely unrelated and the gene causing the mutation is entirely different.

American bobtails are a very sturdy breed, with either short or longhaired coats. Their coat is shaggy rather than dense or fluffy. They can have any color of eyes and fur, with a strong emphasis on the "wild" tabby appearance in show animals.

According to legend, bobtails are the result of a crossbreeding between a domestic tabby cat and a bobcat. Although this IS genetically possible, the unusual tail is actually the result of a random genetic mutation. The breed was recognized by the International Cat Association in 1989.

The true development of this breed began in the late 1960's.  A young couple on vacation discovered a brown tabby kitten with a short tail on an Indian reservation.  They brought the little fellow home and named him "Yodi".  When young Yodi become of age, he romanced the couple's female cat "Mishi", a non-pedigreed domestic color point.  The resulting kittens inherited Yodi's unusual bobbed tail. A family friend saw the possibility to establish a new breed and the first written standard for the American Bobtail came about.

American Bobtails are noted for an exceptional disposition and adaptability.  Their temperament is that of a calm, intelligent and completely manageable cat.  Conformation, balance and temperament should be among the most important factors of this breed.  They are very people oriented and devoted and will bond quickly with all family members including other felines and dogs. They are loving, sweet, playful and loyal companions.

American Bobtails love to fetch, play in water, wag their tails and follow you from room to room.  If taken places as kittens, they love to join their people wherever they go.  They can be trained to do anything you have the patience to teach them to do.  They are incredibly devoted to their people and friendly to strangers.
